Citrix LAS Transition

Everything you need to know before
the April 15, 2026 deadline.

Citrix is transitioning from traditional file-based licensing to the License Activation Service (LAS), a modern, cloud-based activation system designed to simplify license management.

Organizations running affected Citrix on-premises products must complete the transition before April 15, 2026. After this date, file-based licensing will no longer be supported, and LAS will become the exclusive method for activating supported Citrix products. Partners play a critical role in helping customers understand the change and complete the migration process.

What partners need to know:
Transition deadline:

April 15, 2026

After this date, file-based licensing
will no longer be supported.

Risk if no action is taken
Organizations that do not complete the
transition before the deadline may experience service disruption if their environments are
not migrated to LAS.

Who needs to take action
Organizations running Citrix on-premises products using file-based licensing.

Potentially impacted products

  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
  • Citrix Provisioning (PVS)
  • Workspace Environment Management (WEM)
  • NetScaler
  • XenServer
  • XenMobile
  • Unicon Scout
  • uberAgent
Partners should begin identifying which customers may still be using
file-based licensing and guide them through the migration process.
Understanding License Activation Service (LAS)
The License Activation Service (LAS) replaces traditional file-based licensing with a simplified,
cloud-based activation model. Instead of manually managing license files and activation codes,
licenses can be activated and managed through Citrix Cloud, streamlining operations and
reducing administrative overhead.
Why Citrix is introducing LAS
LAS simplifies licensing by:
Eliminating license activation codes
Removing the need to manage license files
Reducing operational overhead
Enabling automated license activation through Citrix Cloud
This modern licensing approach helps organizations maintain more efficient
and reliable license management across their Citrix environments.
How the LAS migration works
The migration follows a simple three-step process:
Upgrade
Ensure the customer environment is running a version that supports the License Activation Service.
Register
Register the deployment with
Citrix Cloud to enable the
LAS licensing model.
Activate
Activate licenses through the License Activation Service to complete the transition.
How partners can support their customers
Successful partners are following a simple three-part motion
to help customers complete the LAS transition.
1
Identify impacted
customers
Build a list of customers using the following Citrix products:

  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (including PVS/WEM)
  • NetScaler
  • XenServer
  • XenMobile
  • Unicon Scout
  • uberAgent

Ask customers to confirm their LAS status using the Citrix LAS status check.
2
Engage
stakeholders
Proactively brief key stakeholders about the transition and the April 15, 2026 deadline.

Important stakeholders may include:

  • IT Operations teams
  • Security teams
  • EUC leaders
  • Procurement teams
Upgrade → Register → Activate
3
Package and
deliver migrations
Partners can support customers by offering structured migration services, such as:

  • LAS readiness assessments
  • Licensing migration planning
  • Full LAS migration engagements

Using Citrix documentation and migration guidance helps partners deliver a consistent and successful transition experience.

Frequently asked questions
Still have questions about the Citrix LAS transition?
Here are answers to the most common ones.
How can I verify if my deployment uses LAS?
LAS status can be checked directly within each product or component console. Partners can use this to quickly identify which customer environments are already using LAS and which still require migration.
What happens if customers do not migrate in time?
After April 15, 2026, file-based licensing will no longer be supported. When upgrading to LAS-compatible versions, systems will stop recognizing file-based licenses, which can result in loss of functionality and impact end-user access.
Does this change impact Citrix Cloud deployments?
No. The LAS transition applies to on-premises components of Citrix products. Customers using only Citrix Cloud services are not impacted by this change.
Can LAS be activated in stages?
Yes. LAS activation can be completed in stages across different environments (for example, NetScaler and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops). These transitions are independent and do not need to happen all at once.
What are the connectivity requirements for using LAS?
LAS requires connectivity between the license server (or NetScaler Console) and Citrix Cloud. The system checks in regularly to maintain activation status. If connectivity is interrupted, there is a grace period to restore it before activation becomes invalid.
Do I need to delete my existing file-based licenses after migrating?
No. File-based licenses are ignored once LAS is enabled. However, as a best practice, customers can remove or return legacy licenses to confirm the transition is complete.
